Mercedes is a city located in Hidalgo County in the U.S. state of Texas, United States. The city was established in 1907 and was named after Mercedes Diaz, the wife of a local land developer involved in promoting the settlement. Mercedes developed as an agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley and later expanded with commerce and tourism in South Texas.
