Cumberland is a city located in Allegany County, Maryland, the United States. It is the county seat of Allegany County and lies in the narrow Cumberland Valley along the Potomac River. The city is about 130 miles west of Baltimore, 145 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and roughly 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Cumberland is located at approximately 39.6529° North latitude and 78.7625° West longitude. The city covers about 10.27 square miles (26.60 sq km) and had 19,076 residents in the 2020 Census. Mountains surround Cumberland, giving the city a distinct Appalachian setting. Cumberland was founded in 1787 and grew as an important transportation center because of its location along the National Road, railroads, and the C&O Canal. The historic downtown contains many 19th-century buildings. The C&O Canal Towpath and Great Allegheny Passage also meet in Cumberland, making the city an important trail destination.
