It lies in northwestern Pennsylvania along the Allegheny River, about 70 miles north of Pittsburgh, 20 miles south of Meadville, and roughly 35 miles east of Oil City. Franklin is positioned at approximately 41.397° North latitude and 79.831° West longitude. The city covers about 2.39 square miles, or 6.19 square kilometers, of land and water. The 2020 Census recorded 6,078 residents, while recent estimates place the population at about 6,000. Franklin stands at an elevation of roughly 1,000 feet above sea level. The city was settled in the late 18th century and incorporated in 1818. Its location along the Allegheny River helped support trade and transportation, while the discovery of petroleum in the surrounding region transformed the local economy during the 19th century.
