It lies on Maryland's Eastern Shore, about 4 miles south of Salisbury, 35 miles west of Ocean City, and roughly 25 miles north of Pocomoke City. Fruitland is positioned at approximately 38.323° North latitude and 75.621° West longitude. The city covers about 3.50 square miles, or 9.07 square kilometers, including land and water. The 2020 Census recorded 5,486 residents, while recent estimates place the population at about 5,500. Fruitland sits at a low elevation typical of Maryland's coastal plain. The community developed as an agricultural settlement in the 19th century and later grew as a residential and commercial suburb of Salisbury. Fruitland was incorporated in 1947 and takes its name from the area's historic orchards and farming activity. The city's location provides easy access to the Wicomico River and the wider network of waterways that shape the Eastern Shore.
