It lies along the Allegheny River in western Pennsylvania, about 18 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and roughly 35 miles southwest of Indiana. Lower Burrell is directly north, while Arnold is just across the river. New Kensington is positioned near 40.569° North latitude and 79.765° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 12,170 residents. The city has about 4.20 square miles, or 10.88 square kilometers, of total area, with about 3.95 square miles of land. The Allegheny River is a major geographic feature and has played an important role in the city's industrial development.
