It lies in the Anthracite Coal Region of central Pennsylvania, about 15 miles east of Sunbury and roughly 35 miles northwest of Pottsville. Harrisburg is approximately 60 miles southwest of Shamokin. The city is located at 40.7884° North latitude and 76.5536° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,942 residents. Shamokin covers about 0.9 square miles (2.3 square kilometers), with nearly all of its area consisting of land. The surrounding hills and former coal fields reflect the area's long mining history.
