Carbondale is a city located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, the United States. It is about 20 miles northeast of Scranton and 35 miles southwest of Binghamton, New York. Carbondale is located at approximately 41.5737° North latitude and 75.5019° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,920 residents, and the city covers about 1.65 square miles (4.27 sq km). The Carbondale Historical Society and nearby historic coal sites reflect the city's strong connection to the anthracite coal industry. Carbondale was founded in 1824 and incorporated as a borough in 1851 before becoming a city in 1901. It is recognized as one of the early centers of anthracite coal mining in northeastern Pennsylvania.
