It is the county seat of Moffat County and lies about 40 miles west of Steamboat Springs and roughly 50 miles east of the Utah state line. Craig is located at approximately 40.5153° North latitude and 107.5464° West longitude. The city covers about 5.16 square miles (13.36 sq km) and had 9,060 residents in the 2020 Census. Craig sits in the Yampa Valley at an elevation of more than 6,000 feet and is surrounded by ranches, grasslands, mesas, and mountain ranges. The city was founded in the late 19th century and incorporated in 1911. Its early growth was linked to ranching, agriculture, coal mining, and railroad transportation. Craig has long been known as a center for the region's energy and ranching industries.
