Louisville is a city located in Boulder County, Colorado, the United States. It lies along Colorado's northern Front Range, about 7 miles southeast of Boulder and roughly 25 miles northwest of Denver. The city is located at approximately 39.978° North latitude and 105.131° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 21,558 residents, and Louisville covers about 8.72 square miles (22.58 sq km). The community was founded in 1878 by Louis Nawatny and developed around nearby coal mines. Louisville was incorporated in 1882 and became an important coal-mining center in the Boulder Valley. As mining declined, the city changed into a residential and commercial community while preserving much of its historic character. Downtown Louisville is one of its best-known attractions, with historic buildings, local shops, restaurants, and public gathering spaces. The city also has an extensive trail network, including the Coal Creek Trail, which connects Louisville with nearby communities and open spaces. The Rocky Mountains rise to the west and provide a prominent backdrop across the region.
