Neosho is a city located in Newton County, Missouri, the United States. It lies in southwest Missouri in the Ozark Highlands, about 25 miles east of Joplin and about 20 miles north of the Oklahoma border. Seneca is roughly 15 miles west, while Carthage is about 30 miles northwest. Neosho is positioned near 36.868° North latitude and 94.369° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 12,590 residents. The city covers about 15.92 square miles, or 41.23 square kilometers, including land and water. The Neosho National Fish Hatchery is one of the city's best-known attractions and is the oldest federal fish hatchery in the United States still in continuous operation. Neosho's name comes from a Native American word associated with clear or cold water. The city developed as an agricultural and commercial center and later became connected to the region's lead and zinc mining industry. Its location makes it an important community in the Four States area near Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
