Washington is a city located in Washington County, Pennsylvania, the United States. It is in southwestern Pennsylvania, about 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, 25 miles north of Waynesburg, and approximately 35 miles southeast of the Ohio state line. Washington lies at about 40.174° North latitude and 80.246° West longitude. The city had 13,176 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 3.79 square miles, or 9.82 square kilometers. Washington was founded in 1768 and became the county seat when Washington County was established in 1781. The city developed as an agricultural, commercial, and transportation center in the region. Washington & Jefferson College, founded in the 18th century, remains an important part of the community and is one of the city's best-known institutions. The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum preserves the history of street railways and electric transportation. Washington is also near several historic roads and trails associated with early American settlement. Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 19 provide major connections to Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and communities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
