Carthage is a city located in Jasper County, Missouri, the United States. It is about 15 miles east of Joplin and 70 miles west of Springfield. Carthage is located at approximately 37.1767° North latitude and 94.3102° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,687 residents, and the city covers about 11.65 square miles (30.17 sq km). The Jasper County Courthouse is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and is known for its distinctive Romanesque architecture. Carthage was founded in 1842 and incorporated in 1871. The city played an important role during the Civil War and later became a regional center for agriculture, commerce, manufacturing, and Route 66 tourism.
