Fruita is a city located in Mesa County, Colorado, the United States. It lies in western Colorado's Grand Valley along the Colorado River, about 12 miles west of Grand Junction, 10 miles east of the Utah state line, and roughly 285 miles west of Denver. Fruita is positioned at approximately 39.159° North latitude and 108.729° West longitude. The city covers about 8.36 square miles, or 21.65 square kilometers, including land and water. The 2020 Census recorded 13,395 residents, while recent estimates place the population at about 14,000. Fruita stands at an elevation of roughly 4,520 feet above sea level. The community was founded in the late 19th century and incorporated in 1909. Its name reflects the area's early agricultural development, especially fruit orchards supported by irrigation from the Colorado River. Today, agriculture remains an important part of the local landscape, while outdoor recreation has become another major feature of the community. Colorado National Monument rises south of Fruita and is known for towering sandstone formations, canyons, overlooks, and scenic drives. Dinosaur National Monument is farther north and preserves important fossil and geological sites.
