Hannibal is a city located in Marion County, Missouri, the United States. It sits along the Mississippi River in northeastern Missouri, about 100 miles northwest of St. Louis and roughly 25 miles southwest of Quincy, Illinois. Hannibal is part of the tri-state area around the Mississippi River and lies near the Illinois border. The city is located at approximately 39.708° North latitude and 91.358° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 17,108 residents. Hannibal covers about 16.21 square miles, or 41.98 square kilometers, including land and water. The city was founded in the early 19th century and incorporated in 1845. River transportation, railroads, manufacturing, and trade helped Hannibal grow into an important regional community. Hannibal is famous as the childhood home of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. Many places in the city inspired settings in his novels, including the fictional town of St. Petersburg.
