Marshfield is a city located in Webster County, Missouri, the United States. It lies in southwest Missouri, about 25 miles northeast of Springfield and roughly 55 miles southwest of Lebanon. Marshfield is located at approximately 37.339° North latitude and 92.907° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,583 residents, and the city covers about 5.84 square miles (15.13 sq km). Marshfield was founded in 1830 and incorporated in 1855. It became the county seat of Webster County and developed as a regional center for farming, commerce, and transportation. The arrival of the railroad strengthened its role as a local trading center, while U.S. Route 66 later brought travelers through the community. Marshfield is particularly known as the birthplace of Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer whose work helped establish that galaxies exist beyond the Milky Way and that the universe is expanding.
