Odessa is a city located in Lafayette County, Missouri, the United States. It lies in western Missouri, about 50 miles east of downtown Kansas City and roughly 20 miles west of Lexington. Oak Grove is about 20 miles west, while Warrensburg is around 25 miles southeast. Odessa is positioned near 38.999° North latitude and 93.953° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,593 residents. The city covers about 4.83 square miles, or 12.51 square kilometers, including land and water. Odessa is surrounded by agricultural land and gently rolling terrain typical of western Missouri. The city developed along the Missouri Pacific Railroad and later benefited from its location near Interstate 70. Historic Route 40 also passes through the community, connecting Odessa with the wider transportation history of the region. Nearby attractions include the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site, Odessa Community Museum, and the Rock Island Spur of the Katy Trail State Park. Odessa was incorporated in 1878. A unique feature of the city is its connection to the historic Rock Island Railroad and its location near the former Rock Island rail corridor, which has become part of a regional recreational trail network.
