Trinidad is a city located in Las Animas County, Colorado, the United States. It lies in southeastern Colorado near the New Mexico state line, about 195 miles south of Colorado Springs and roughly 30 miles north of Raton, New Mexico. Walsenburg is about 45 miles north, while La Junta is approximately 85 miles east of Trinidad. The city is located at 37.1695° North latitude and 104.5005° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,329 residents. Trinidad covers about 6.33 square miles, or approximately 16.39 square kilometers. The city sits along the Purgatoire River at the base of the Raton Mesa and near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Trinidad developed as an important transportation and coal-mining center during the 19th century, and its historic buildings preserve much of that past. The Trinidad History Museum and historic downtown offer insight into the city's early settlement, railroads, ranching, and mining industries. Trinidad Lake State Park, just west of the city, provides boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
