Brazil is a city in west-central Indiana and the county seat of Clay County. It is about 15 miles east of Terre Haute and 60 miles west of Indianapolis. The city grew from a 19th-century coal-mining community and is known for the historic Clay County Courthouse, Forest Park, and its location along the Wabash Valley.

Where is Brazil Located?
Brazil is a city located in Clay County, Indiana, the United States. It lies in west-central Indiana, approximately 15 miles east of Terre Haute, 25 miles west of Greencastle, and about 60 miles west of Indianapolis. The city is located at approximately 39.5237° North latitude and 87.1250° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,181 residents. Brazil covers about 3.80 square miles, or 9.84 square kilometers, including approximately 3.77 square miles of land and 0.03 square miles of water. The city developed during the 19th century as coal mining and railroad activity expanded through the Wabash Valley. The historic Clay County Courthouse is a major downtown landmark. Brazil was founded in 1866 and named after the country of Brazil, reportedly because founder Harrison Carter wanted a distinctive name for the new community. Today, Brazil serves as a local center for Clay County.
