Madison is a city located in Jefferson County in the U.S. state of Indiana, United States. Situated in southeastern Indiana along the Ohio River, the city serves as the county seat of Jefferson County and is known for its well-preserved historic architecture and riverfront heritage. Madison was established in 1809 and was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. The city developed as an important river port and transportation center during the nineteenth century and remains recognized for its historic downtown district.
