Hartford City is a city located in Blackford County, Indiana, the United States. It lies in east-central Indiana, about 20 miles south of Muncie and roughly 25 miles north of Anderson. Hartford City serves as the county seat of Blackford County and is part of a rural region surrounded by farmland and small communities. The city is located at approximately 40.451° North latitude and 85.370° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,888 residents. Hartford City covers about 3.95 square miles, or 10.23 square kilometers, and is primarily land. The community was founded in the 1830s and incorporated in 1857. Its growth accelerated during the Indiana natural gas boom of the late 19th century, when factories and other industries moved into the area because of the availability of inexpensive natural gas. After the gas fields declined, agriculture and manufacturing became important parts of the local economy. Today, Hartford City remains a regional center for county government and community services. Nearby attractions include the Blackford County Historical Society Museum, Hartford City Park, and Summit Lake State Park.
