Salem is a city located in Washington County, Indiana, the United States. It lies in southern Indiana, about 35 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky, and roughly 35 miles south of Bloomington. Paoli is around 20 miles west, while Scottsburg is about 30 miles southeast. Salem is positioned near 38.606° North latitude and 86.101° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,151 residents. The city covers about 4.30 square miles, or 11.14 square kilometers. Salem was founded in 1814 and incorporated in 1839. It serves as the county seat of Washington County and developed as a local center for farming, government, and trade.
