It lies in southern Indiana, about 30 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky, and approximately 40 miles south of Columbus, Indiana. Indianapolis is about 45 miles north of Scottsburg. Scottsburg covers about 6.70 square miles (17.35 square kilometers), with nearly all of its area consisting of land. Hardy Lake State Recreation Area, east of the city, is one of the best-known nearby outdoor attractions and offers boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. Scottsburg also serves as the county seat of Scott County.
