Denison, Texas - Key Historical Facts
Denison was founded in 1872 as an important Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad town and quickly became a major transportation hub in North Texas.
The city is the birthplace of the 34th U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose childhood home is preserved as a state historic site.
Its strategic location near the Red River encouraged rapid commercial growth, cattle trade, and railroad expansion during the late 19th century.
Construction of Denison Dam in the 1940s created Lake Texoma, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States and a major recreation destination.
Historic downtown Denison has retained many late-19th and early-20th century buildings that now house shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums.
Today, Denison is recognized for its railroad heritage, presidential history, outdoor recreation, and its role as a gateway to Lake Texoma.
