It lies in the Salinas Valley of Central California, about 25 miles southeast of Salinas and roughly 40 miles south of Santa Cruz. Gonzales is part of the Monterey Bay region and sits near U.S. Route 101, which connects the city with Salinas, Monterey, and communities farther south. The city is located at approximately 36.506° North latitude and 121.445° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,276 residents. Gonzales covers about 2.25 square miles, or 5.83 square kilometers, and is surrounded by productive agricultural land. The city was founded in 1874 and incorporated in 1947.
