The city lies along Interstate 80 in the western Sierra Nevada foothills, approximately 33 miles (53 km) northeast of Sacramento, 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Roseville, and about 80 miles (129 km) southwest of Lake Tahoe. Auburn is located at 38.8966° North latitude and 121.0769° West longitude. According to the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 13,776. Auburn covers approximately 7.18 square miles (18.60 sq km).
