Clayton is located at approximately 37.9410° North latitude and 121.9358° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 11,260 residents, and the city covers about 3.84 square miles (9.95 sq km). Clayton sits at the base of Mount Diablo, giving the city access to nearby hills, trails, and open spaces. The area was settled in the 19th century and the city was incorporated in 1964. Clayton's location near State Route 4 provides easy access to Concord, Walnut Creek, Antioch, and other East Bay communities.
