Exeter is a city located in Tulare County, California, the United States. It sits in the eastern San Joaquin Valley, about 16 miles east of Visalia, 45 miles southeast of Fresno, and roughly 70 miles north of Bakersfield. Exeter is positioned at approximately 36.297° North latitude and 119.142° West longitude. The city covers about 2.46 square miles, or 6.37 square kilometers, of land. The 2020 Census recorded 10,321 residents, and the 2024 population estimate was 10,186. Exeter stands at an elevation of roughly 340 feet above sea level. The city is surrounded by agricultural land, especially citrus orchards and vineyards. Its downtown is widely recognized for a collection of large outdoor murals that tell stories about local history and community life. Exeter was founded in 1888 along the Southern Pacific Railroad and incorporated in 1911. Its location also places it within easy driving distance of Sequoia National Park and the Sierra Nevada foothills.
