Gridley is a city located in Butte County, California, the United States. It lies in the northern Sacramento Valley, about 25 miles south of Chico and roughly 60 miles north of Sacramento. The city is located at approximately 39.364° North latitude and 121.694° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,884 residents. Gridley covers about 2.11 square miles, or 5.46 square kilometers, and is almost entirely land. The community was founded in the 1870s and incorporated in 1905. Its early growth was closely tied to the California and Oregon Railroad, which helped connect local farms with larger markets. Agriculture remains an important part of the area's identity, with rice, almonds, walnuts, peaches, and other crops grown throughout the surrounding valley. Gridley is also close to the Feather River, which provides wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation. Nearby attractions include the Sutter Buttes, Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, and the Feather River.
