Laguna Woods is a city located in Orange County, California, the United States. It lies in southern Orange County, about 10 miles southeast of Irvine and roughly 50 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Laguna Woods is located at approximately 33.610° North latitude and 117.725° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 16,192 residents, and the city covers about 3.35 square miles (8.68 sq km). The community began as Leisure World Laguna Hills, a large planned residential development that opened in the 1960s. Laguna Woods incorporated as a city in 1999 and became one of the smallest cities in Orange County by land area. The city is closely associated with Laguna Woods Village, a large age-restricted residential community that occupies most of the city. Nearby attractions include Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Crystal Cove State Park, Laguna Beach, and the Pacific Ocean. The surrounding landscape features coastal hills, canyons, chaparral, and developed residential areas. A unique feature of Laguna Woods is that much of its land is occupied by a planned community designed around residential living, recreation, clubs, and golf facilities.
