Los Alamitos is a city located in Orange County, California, the United States. It lies in northwestern Orange County, about 25 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and roughly 8 miles northeast of Huntington Beach. Long Beach is directly northwest, while Seal Beach is just west of the city. Los Alamitos is located at approximately 33.802° North latitude and 118.071° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 11,721 residents, and the city covers about 4.28 square miles (11.09 sq km). Los Alamitos was incorporated in 1960 after developing from a former agricultural community. The name means "the little cottonwoods" in Spanish and refers to the cottonwood trees that once grew in the area. The city has a strong military connection because the Los Alamitos Army Airfield was established during World War II and remains an important training facility. Los Alamitos Race Course is another well-known local landmark and has hosted horse racing for decades. Nearby Seal Beach and the Pacific Ocean provide access to beaches and coastal recreation.
