Oroville is a city located in Butte County, California, the United States. It lies in the northern Sacramento Valley near the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 25 miles north of Chico and roughly 70 miles north of Sacramento. Paradise is about 15 miles east, while Marysville is around 35 miles south. Oroville is positioned near 39.513° North latitude and 121.557° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 20,042 residents. The city covers about 13.88 square miles, or 35.95 square kilometers. Oroville developed during the California Gold Rush and later became an important agricultural, transportation, and water-management center. Lake Oroville and the Oroville Dam are the area's best-known landmarks. The lake offers boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing, while the Feather River runs through the city. Oroville was incorporated in 1906. A unique fact about the city is that Oroville Dam is one of the tallest dams in the United States and forms the largest reservoir in the State Water Project.
