It lies on the western side of the San Joaquin Valley, about 25 miles west of Modesto and roughly 70 miles east of San Jose. Turlock is around 35 miles southeast, while Tracy is about 25 miles northwest. Patterson is positioned near 37.472° North latitude and 121.129° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 23,781 residents. The city covers about 6.05 square miles, or 15.67 square kilometers. Patterson was established as an agricultural colony in the early 20th century and was planned around irrigation, orchards, and farming.
