Piedmont is about 6 miles east of downtown San Francisco and roughly 8 miles north of downtown Oakland. Berkeley is around 5 miles northwest, while Alameda is about 7 miles southwest. Piedmont covers about 1.71 square miles, or 4.43 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest incorporated cities in California by area. The community developed as a residential suburb of Oakland and incorporated as a city in 1908.
