Where is Pismo Beach Located?

Pismo Beach is a city located in San Luis Obispo County, California, the United States. It lies on the Pacific Coast in the Central Coast region, about 15 miles south of San Luis Obispo and roughly 12 miles west of Arroyo Grande. Grover Beach is around 3 miles south, while Oceano is about 5 miles south. Pismo Beach is positioned near 35.142° North latitude and 120.641° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,182 residents. The city covers about 3.61 square miles, or 9.35 square kilometers. Pismo Beach developed as a coastal resort and fishing community and later became a well-known destination along California's Highway 1. Its long sandy shoreline is the city's most recognizable geographic feature. The Pismo Beach Pier extends into the Pacific Ocean and is a major local landmark. Another famous attraction is the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove, where thousands of monarch butterflies may gather during the cooler months. The city is also close to the Oceano Dunes and the vineyards and farms of the San Luis Obispo County coast. Pismo Beach was incorporated in 1946. A unique fact about the city is that it was once widely associated with clam harvesting, giving rise to the famous phrase "Pismo clams."
