Port Hueneme is a city located in Ventura County, California, the United States. It lies on the Pacific Coast in Southern California, about 65 miles west of downtown Los Angeles and roughly 5 miles south of Ventura. Oxnard surrounds much of the city, while Camarillo is about 10 miles northeast. Port Hueneme is positioned near 34.147° North latitude and 119.195° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 21,549 residents. The city covers about 4.45 square miles, or 11.53 square kilometers. Port Hueneme has one of the few deep-water commercial ports between Los Angeles and San Francisco, making it an important shipping and transportation center. The Port of Hueneme handles automobiles, agricultural products, construction materials, and other cargo. The city also has a long connection with the U.S. Navy and is home to Naval Base Ventura County, which includes Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme. The surrounding coastline features sandy beaches, dunes, wetlands, and marine habitats. A unique fact about Port Hueneme is that it is the only deep-water harbor between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. The city was incorporated in 1948. Its name comes from a Chumash word associated with the area.
