San Fernando is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, the United States. It lies in the northeastern San Fernando Valley, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles and roughly 10 miles north of Burbank. The city is surrounded on most sides by the Los Angeles city limits, including Pacoima and Mission Hills, while the foothills of the San Gabriel and Santa Susana Mountains are nearby. San Fernando is positioned near 34.288° North latitude and 118.436° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 23,946 residents. The city covers about 2.37 square miles, or 6.14 square kilometers. San Fernando was incorporated in 1911 and is one of the few independent cities located within the San Fernando Valley. Its history is closely connected to Mission San Fernando Rey de España, which was founded in 1797 and became an important center of the early Spanish and Mexican periods in California. The city's economy later developed around agriculture, manufacturing, railroads, and services. A unique feature of San Fernando is its compact independent-city government surrounded almost entirely by Los Angeles.
