Sonoma is a city located in Sonoma County, California, the United States. It lies in Sonoma Valley in Northern California, about 45 miles north of San Francisco and 15 miles southeast of Santa Rosa. Napa is about 15 miles east, while Petaluma is roughly 20 miles southwest of Sonoma. The city is located at 38.2920° North latitude and 122.4579° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 10,739 residents. Sonoma covers about 2.74 square miles (7.09 square kilometers) of land. The city sits between Sonoma Mountain and the Mayacamas Mountains, which help shape the valley's climate and vineyards. Sonoma Plaza is the city's best-known landmark and was the site of the Bear Flag Revolt in 1846. Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of California's 21 Spanish missions, is also located near the plaza. A unique feature of Sonoma is its combination of wine-country landscapes and nationally important California history centered around its historic plaza.
