Sonora is a city located in Tuolumne County, California, the United States. It lies in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Central California, about 80 miles east of Stockton and 65 miles northeast of Modesto. Jamestown is about 4 miles south, while Columbia is roughly 5 miles north of Sonora. The city is located at 37.9841° North latitude and 120.3821° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,003 residents. Sonora covers about 3.02 square miles (7.82 square kilometers), with nearly all of its area consisting of land. The surrounding foothills are covered with oak woodland, rolling terrain, and forested mountain landscapes. Sonora developed during the California Gold Rush and remains one of the region's most important historic communities. Downtown Sonora contains historic buildings, shops, restaurants, and landmarks connected to the city's Gold Rush past. Columbia State Historic Park is located nearby and preserves a former Gold Rush mining town. A unique feature of Sonora is its role as a gateway to the Sierra Nevada, with Yosemite National Park and Stanislaus National Forest within driving distance.
