Situated along the Gulf Coast in southern Mississippi, the city lies west of Bay St. Louis and is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area. Waveland was established in 1888 and developed as a coastal resort community known for its beaches and maritime culture. The city continues to be recognized for its coastal environment, residential neighborhoods, and recovery and redevelopment following Hurricane Katrina.
