Breckenridge is a city located in Stephens County, Texas, the United States. It lies in North Texas, about 80 miles west of Fort Worth, 55 miles east of Abilene, and roughly 35 miles north of Mineral Wells. The city is located at approximately 32.7557° North latitude and 98.9023° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,221 residents. Breckenridge covers about 11.84 square miles, or 30.67 square kilometers, including approximately 11.65 square miles of land and 0.19 square miles of water. Hubbard Creek Reservoir is a major nearby geographic and recreational feature. Breckenridge developed rapidly after oil was discovered in the area in the early 20th century and became an important oil-producing center. The city was founded in 1876 and named after John C. Breckinridge, a former U.S. vice president, although the city uses a slightly different spelling. Today, Breckenridge remains a regional center for ranching, energy, and local commerce.
