It serves as the county seat of both Dallam County and Hartley County and is located in the northern Texas Panhandle. Dalhart is about 80 miles north of Amarillo, 35 miles south of the Oklahoma border, and about 20 miles from the New Mexico state line. The city is located at approximately 36.0595° North latitude and 102.5133° West longitude. Dalhart covers about 4.76 square miles (12.33 sq km) and had 8,262 residents in the 2020 Census. The city sits on the high, open plains of the Llano Estacado and experiences a dry, windy climate.
