Decatur is a city located in Wise County, Texas, the United States. It is the county seat of Wise County and lies in North Texas, about 45 miles northwest of Fort Worth and 50 miles northwest of Dallas. Decatur is also about 35 miles northeast of Bridgeport and 25 miles south of the LBJ National Grassland. The city is located at approximately 33.2343° North latitude and 97.5861° West longitude. Decatur covers about 8.83 square miles (22.87 sq km) and had 6,538 residents in the 2020 Census. The area has rolling hills, grasslands, wooded creek valleys, and open ranchland. Decatur was founded in 1856 and incorporated in 1857. The city grew as an agricultural and trading center and later benefited from nearby oil and gas development. The Wise County Courthouse stands in the center of the historic downtown square and is one of the city's best-known landmarks.
