Gonzales is a city located in Gonzales County, Texas, the United States. It lies in south-central Texas, about 70 miles east of San Antonio and roughly 80 miles southeast of Austin. Gonzales is the county seat and serves as a regional center for the surrounding rural communities. The city is located at approximately 29.501° North latitude and 97.452° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,165 residents. Gonzales covers about 6.64 square miles, or 17.2 square kilometers. The city was founded in 1825 as one of the first Anglo-American settlements in Texas. Gonzales played a major role in the opening events of the Texas Revolution in 1835, when local settlers refused to return a small cannon demanded by Mexican authorities. The famous "Come and Take It" flag became a symbol of the resistance. Today, the Gonzales Memorial Museum and nearby historic sites preserve this important chapter of Texas history.
