Where is Plainview Located?

Plainview is a city located in Hale County, Texas, the United States. It lies on the Llano Estacado in the southern Texas Panhandle, about 45 miles north of Lubbock and roughly 45 miles south of Amarillo. Canyon is around 35 miles north, while Tulia is about 25 miles northwest. Plainview is positioned near 34.185° North latitude and 101.706° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 20,187 residents. The city covers about 13.81 square miles, or 35.77 square kilometers. Plainview developed as an agricultural community after the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century. Cotton, grain, cattle, and other agricultural products have played major roles in the local economy. The flat landscape surrounding the city is typical of the Llano Estacado, one of the largest high plains regions in North America. Wayland Baptist University is located in Plainview and has been an important part of the community since the late 19th century. The Museum of the Llano Estacado preserves artifacts and exhibits about the region's history, Native American cultures, ranching, and settlement. A unique fact about Plainview is that the city was once known as the location of a large bison kill site, where archaeological evidence revealed that prehistoric people hunted bison in the region. Plainview was incorporated in 1907. US-70 and US-87 provide major transportation connections to Lubbock, Amarillo, and other West Texas communities.
