Progreso is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas, the United States. It lies in the Rio Grande Valley along the Rio Grande, directly across the international border from Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, Mexico. McAllen is about 35 miles northwest, while Weslaco is around 8 miles north and Mercedes is about 10 miles northwest. Progreso is positioned near 26.093° North latitude and 97.958° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,255 residents. The city covers about 0.92 square miles, or 2.38 square kilometers. Progreso was incorporated in 1961 and developed from a rural agricultural community near the Rio Grande.
