Where is Yoakum Located?
Yoakum is a city located in DeWitt County and Lavaca County, Texas, the United States. It is in southeastern Texas, about 90 miles southeast of San Antonio, 110 miles southwest of Houston, and approximately 65 miles north of Victoria. Yoakum lies at approximately 29.288° North latitude and 97.151° West longitude. The city had 5,815 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 4.13 square miles, or 10.70 square kilometers. Yoakum was founded in 1887 after the arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway and was named after railroad executive Benjamin F. Yoakum. The railroad helped transform the community into an important transportation and agricultural center. Yoakum became especially well known for leather manufacturing, with the local leather industry developing into a major part of the city's economy. Agriculture, cattle ranching, manufacturing, and small businesses remain important to the area. The city is also known for its Czech and German heritage, which is reflected in local festivals and community traditions.
