It is the county seat of Houston County and lies about 45 miles west of Lufkin, 60 miles southeast of Palestine, and roughly 120 miles north of Houston. Crockett is located at approximately 31.3182° North latitude and 95.4566° West longitude. The city covers about 9.36 square miles (24.24 sq km) and had 6,332 residents in the 2020 Census. The surrounding landscape includes pine and hardwood forests, farms, creeks, and rolling East Texas terrain. Crockett was founded in 1837 and named after frontiersman and former U.S. congressman Davy Crockett. The city grew as an agricultural and trade center and later became an important railroad community.
