Elgin is a city located in Bastrop County, Texas, the United States. It lies in Central Texas about 20 miles east of Austin and roughly 25 miles southwest of Bastrop. Round Rock is about 25 miles northwest, while Taylor is approximately 18 miles north. Elgin is located at approximately 30.35° North latitude and 97.37° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 9,784 residents. The city covers about 6.80 square miles, or 17.61 square kilometers. Elgin is part of the greater Austin metropolitan area and has grown as residential development has expanded eastward from Austin. The city is widely known for its barbecue tradition and is sometimes called the Sausage Capital of Texas because of its long history of sausage production. Historic downtown Elgin contains older commercial buildings and railroad-era architecture. Nearby parks, creeks, farms, and rural landscapes provide outdoor and scenic opportunities. The city's location near U.S. Route 290 and State Highway 95 also makes it an important transportation point between Austin, Bastrop, and Taylor.
