Los Fresnos is a city located in Cameron County, Texas, the United States. It lies in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, about 15 miles northeast of Brownsville and roughly 20 miles west of South Padre Island. The city is located at approximately 26.071° North latitude and 97.476° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,781 residents, and Los Fresnos covers about 4.47 square miles (11.58 sq km). The community was established in the early 20th century and incorporated in 1950. Its name comes from the Spanish term for ash trees, which once grew in the area. Los Fresnos developed around agriculture and ranching, with citrus, vegetables, livestock, and other farming activities shaping the surrounding landscape. The city is close to the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important wildlife areas in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The refuge protects coastal wetlands, grasslands, and habitat for birds and other wildlife. A unique feature of Los Fresnos is its location between the agricultural interior of the Rio Grande Valley and the coastal ecosystems around Laguna Madre.
