The city was established in the early twentieth century and was incorporated in 1928 as an agricultural settlement in the western part of Palm Beach County. Belle Glade developed historically through sugarcane farming and agricultural trade in the fertile lands surrounding Lake Okeechobee. Today the city is recognized as an important agricultural center within the Everglades region.
